Hi…we just arrived after being away for a few weeks and the lake is up…will the lake be allowed to drain before refilling around April 15th? We have hired a contractor since I thought spring work can be completed up until the dam is blocked on April 15th. Our contractor is scheduled to start in a few weeks, but can’t do the work since the lake is up.

    • archman8

Recent rains and warm weather have led to a swift snow melt and brought the lake level up high. Although the sluice gate at the dam is wide open, it’s only a 4-foot diameter opening and there is no guarantee the water will get back down to winter levels – it’s completely weather dependent. A long spell of cold and dry weather would help, and you may get lucky with a brief window of time to finish your project.

Our latest DEC draw-down permit (received last October) requires that we raise the lake to summer level as soon as ice is off the water in the spring; that means any time after March 21st. Because of this, the front page of the Fall 2016 newsletter as well as posts on our website and Facebook page recommended that all shoreline projects be completed in the fall. This will likely be the new norm moving forward.

Hi. Quick question regarding the Eco-Harvester. If we don’t raise the $76K do we not get the Eco Harvester? Also, what happens to the donations if we don’t reach $76K?

    Thanks
    Bruce O’Donnell
    115 West St Ext

    • archman8

All donations received will go toward the purchase of the harvester and related equipment. The purpose of soliciting donations was to avoid depleting the KLCโ€™s financial reserves. Donations have been coming in strong so far, but the KLC will make up the difference if the $76,000 goal is not reached by the time the harvester is delivered later this spring. The KLC will continue soliciting donations until the full goal is reached. Thanks for your interest.

  • Eileen

Question regarding Eco Harvester – from reading info on this site, it says we only have approval from DEC to cut water chestnuts. Do we have approval from DEC for this EcoHarvester?

    • archman8

Excellent question. In December we had a face-to-face meeting with DEC regarding the ECO-Harvester and, based on their comments, submitted a permit application the first week in January. We understand that DEC will need to do their due-diligence in reviewing the application, but have no reason to believe they will deny a permit. However, as a fall back, the ECO-Harvester folks have agreed to refund our deposit in full if we are denied a DEC permit or if the permit includes restrictions unacceptable to the KLC. Thanks so much for your interest.

is there going to be a BBQ this year?

    • archman8

Sorry, no BBQ this year ๐Ÿ™

Found a gate key was left in launch gate on July 21, 2016. Has two specific keychains attached to it. Please email me at dparker9286@gmail.com if it belongs to you. Also has two specific key chains on it- please identify what they are in the email.

    Thank you

We just recently joined Kinderhook so we could launch our boat from there, so far we love it other than the fact parking is a nightmare at times. People without trailers are parking in spots that should be used for trailers. I feel that they should be a little more curtious of this, we do pay a membership fee and they do not. We almost have to get there really early just to be able to park. Has this ever been addressed? Is there any other parking? Thank you.
    Jenn

    • archman8

Thanks for your comments. First, thank you for your membership. Membership dues are the primary source of income to allow the KLC to maintain the lake and dam. Second, we are sorry you are having trouble parking at the launch. The limited parking at the launch has been a concern for the last few years. When Kinderhook Town Hall occupied the building above the launch, we were permitted to use that lot for overflow parking; that building has since been sold and we no longer have that parking option. This year the KLC installed parking signs at the launch directing cars with and without trailers where to park. Believe it or not, it HAS made a difference. However, the KLC unfortunately has no way to monitor or supervise parking at the launch on a daily basis. We continue to look at options to improve the parking situation. Any viable suggestions would be appreciated.

I am looking to see if anyone has a recommendation on a residential trash removal company on Kinderhook Lake. Our current company has a 30% failure rate on picking up the trash, with excuses after excuses
    Thanks

    • archman8

Been using County Waste for years at 2 houses without any problems.

  • joe marchesi

we seem to have a larger than normal weed problem this year, any ideas to help with the problem? thank you, joe marchesi

    • archman8

Yes, the weed beds have expanded since last year. They are becoming difficult to avoid except in the deepest areas of the lake. There are no easy, quick or inexpensive ways to deal with the weeds. We are educating lake users the best we can. A few initiatives will take place this summer. Many options are being explored by the Weed Committee, but are too numerous to discuss here.

  • joe marchesi

4/23/2016 the water level seems to be rising more slowly this year, is that a problem?

    • archman8

The sluice gate at the dam is closed down to the limit set by DEC (a certain amount of water is required by DEC to flow down the Valatiekill). With no snow runoff this year and not much rain, it’s taking much longer than usual to fill the lake. Whether its a problem or not remains to be seen. If you’re anxious to get your boat in the water, it’s a problem. It might be a problem for some of the fish spawns, but we may never know for sure. Unfortunately, we’re at the mercy of the weather. Pray for rain. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Carl

Please a clarification. Wanting to pay my 2016 membership, do I need to also purchase a gate key or will the gate at the Launch or Rose Street be open during any specific dates ? Thank you

    • archman8

If you wish to access the Rt 28 launch, you will need to purchase a key. The gate is only left open very early in the spring and very late in the fall – sorry, I don’t know the exact dates.

  • Valeriy

To whom it may concern; my farther Valeriy Kazko needs to change his mailing address from 485 Stove Pipe Rd, Voorheesville, NY 12186 to his new mailing address 753 Feura Bush Rd, Delmar NY 12054. • archman8

Will pass this the on to the necessary parties.

  • Lars Weinrich

Hello All, Relatively new to the lake. Moved into shoreline property in 2013 over on Ottoville Rd. I’m starting to look into upgrading replacing existing worn out dock. Anybody have any contractor recommendations?

    Thanks!

  • Ed Denecke

There were some folks with an airboat on the lake yesterday and today. Unbelievably loud!! Dangerous boat handling characteristics!
We might want to consider prohibiting airboats for noise and safety concerns. Lots of communities in the south have done so and I understand Copake Lake has also prohibited them.

  • Allen B

I found a facebook page for the Kinderhook Lake Improvement Association… Is the KLC the same thing? Side note… If it’s not the same thing, a KLC facebook page would be greatly appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

    • archman8

The KLC and KLIA are two completely separate organizations.
The KLC’s main function is to maintain and upkeep Kinderhook Lake and the Niver’s Dam – always remember, if there is no dam there is no lake. The KLC’s funding comes from memberships and donations, and uses the funding to maintain the dam, water quality and fish population.
The KLIA on the other hand is simply a social organization, and while they do fund raising for local charities, the KLIA has NO duties related to the maintenance or upkeep of the lake or dam.
A KLC facebook page has been discussed and is currently in the works.

  • Carl

In regards to parking at the launch site, care should be taken in setting regulations or procedures at the launch area. The more regulations and rules, the more KLC becomes responsible and perhaps liable for activities which take place there. It was understood that parking there was on a first come basis and the size of the area was to provided limited parking. _Please remember, the increase in more, large, motorized, occasional boats introduced into the lake, the greater the opportunity to introduce AIS. Thank you

  • Pat DeToffol

I read that launch keys have been mailed. As of yet (5/18/15), we have not received one. Is there another way we can obtain one?

    • archman8

Sorry for the delay – keys are on their way!

  • ashley

Hi. Have the keys been sent? We just went down and its locked but we have not received a key yet

    • archman8

      Keys have been mailed.

  • DON

    HI
HOW ABOUT DISABILITY PARKING SPOTS FOR CARS WITH TRAILER?

    • archman8

All parking provides generally the same ease of access and distance
      to the ramp.

      • Don Paradise

I know but when its full…(quite often) I can’t park above and walk down.
also there should be long spots for cars with trailers , not for car toppers

        • archman8

I understand your concern. The Board will be discussing launch parking issues at its next meeting later this month.

  • Mike

Is there no more lake access to the public unless they join the KLC?

    • archman8

In an effort to reduce the spread of invasive species, the KLC attempts to keep its members educated and informed about the need to clean their watercraft and equipment before and after accessing the lake. Through this effort, it is our hope that KLC members are better informed about this issue than the general public.

Please also keep in mind that the main goal of the KLC is to be stewards of Kinderhook Lake. Thanks entirely to membership dues, sponsors, donations and volunteers, the KLC is able to properly maintain the dam and quality of the lake water – all very costly and time consuming. The dam and lake are NOT maintained by New York State, nor any other agencies or organizations.

      • mike

        So thats a yes.

  • Michael Boor

    Thank you for the clarification.

  • Michael Boor

I heard the DEC closed the Rose St launch yesterday, and placed a large well casing blocking the launch. Is this true? if so is there info why the launch was closed?

    • archman8

Please see the article on the first page of the Spring 2015 KLC News found on the NEWSLETTERS page of this website. It explains what is going on with the Rose Street launch. There are NO well casings blocking the launch.

  • molly

Hi- this Molly, the daughter of the owner of Cap Shaver’s Island — We are going to be on the lake for 4th of July for the first time in a few years, and we’d love to participate as a flag/ticket location for the Kayak rally if you’re still looking for volunteers. If so, how can we sign up?

    • archman8

Thanks for reaching out Molly. We definitely need volunteers to fly flags and distibute tickets. Please call Russ Camadine at 518-857-6853. Thanks again.

  • Dennis

I was wondering when the keys to the boat launch will be sent out?

    • archman8

We have been running into a delay in getting out the gate keys and trailer stickers. Rest assured the launch gate will remain open until after the keys have been distributed to members. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • Allen B

Also, I am looking for any referrals for a contractor to repair my retaining wall/bulkhead. Anyone have one done recently?

    • archman8

Cavagnaro Construction did a great job rebuilding my bulkhead and dock several years ago. You can find their contact info on the SPONSORS page of this website.

    • Carl H

Kile Mitchison Cell number 857 2434 He did my bulkhead and walls 2 years ago. Reliable, excellent work, reasonable. I highly recommend Kile. Would call him back for any other work I might need. Niverville resident as well.

  • Allen B

Hi, I was wondering what the differences were in the memberships?

    • archman8

The different memberships represent one’s level of commitment
to helping the KLC maintain the lake and dam.

  • Andrew

Is kinderhook lake safe for ice skating right now?

    • archman8

You can search the DEC website for information about this subject (mostly related to ice fishing). The KLC cannot evaluate or determine ice safety.

  • Pete Citrolo

Thank You ,Thank you to those responsible for puttin the repai concrete on th boat launch. I am very grateful

  • WW

What are the results of the fishing derby?

    • archman8

Winners have been posted on the home page, thanks for the reminder.

MISSING/STOLEN Green Coleman Canoe and Red Kayak. If they wandered away and you are wondering where they belong please contact us llvt@optonline.net or Laura at 201-803-6314. Believe they went missing in April/early May. Hoping that they some how slipped into the lake. But fear they were taken.

  • Lisa

I posted a question several months ago regarding the rising lake level when the ice was still on the lake. I had asked if it was possible to post emergency info on the lake level (in the event of a sudden rise/fall), but my question was not answered and was removed. As a member of KLC, and a supporter of the lake fundraiser, I was disappointed to see my question was disregarded. I am not a full timer on the lake and I saw severe damage to my neighbor’s dock from the ice, and our floating dock was dragged away (even though it was out of the water at a level normally not touched in the winter months). Your reply would be appreciated….and unfortunately I will not be at the meeting on the 21st.

    • archman8

      Lisa,

Your question several months ago was posted on April 3 as a comment to a HOME page post; it was not placed on this COMMENTS page, hence you will not find a reply here. If you go to the HOME page and scroll down to the post titled, “Lake Level and Dam Repairs” from April 3, you will see the words “2 Comments” just below the title. Click on “2 Comments” and you will see your comment and my reply left shortly afterwards.

Sorry for any confusion. I have since changed things so that no comments can be left directly on HOME page posts – all comments must now be made on the COMMENTS page. This will hopefully resolve any future confusion. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Has anything been brought up at the meetings about all of the kids swimming at the Rt 28 boat launch.
I have found on numerous occasions these kids leave their shoes/clothing all over the middle of the launch, they do not get off the dock when boats are coming in/out of the lake and they also swim right in front of the boat launch.
It makes for a dangerous situation as most of them are there completely unsupervised and I’m concerned for their safety as well as the safety of other boaters.
Maybe a sign can be put up indicating “swimming is prohibited directly in front of launch” as well as “Dock is for KLC member-use only”?
On a different topic- are there any plans to lengthen the dock- it’s rather short for a 20’+ boat?

    • archman8

Dave, the concern about swimmers at the launch has been discussed for years. There should be a DEC sign posted indicating no swimming within 100โ€™ of the launch โ€“ this is a DEC regulation. The main issue is that of monitoring activities at the launch. With an all volunteer Board (many with full time jobs), monitoring falls to members who would be willing to call the Sheriffโ€™s office to file a complaint while swimming is observed. The Sheriff’s phone number is posted at the launch. Video surveillance has also been discussed, but has not yet been approved.

I would suggest you attend the June 21st public Board Meeting at the KLIA Hall and present your concerns.

      • dave

A member of my family actually works for the DEC, I will see if she can ask someone she works with about putting up a sign.

I realize kids want to swim on a hot day, but, there is plenty of room to the side of the launch, out of danger. It’s bothersome that they want to swim right smack in the mdidle of the launch and then congregate on the dock/jump off of it.

I will not be able to attend the meeting due to prior arrangements, but, I will do what I can to see about getting a sign put up by the DEC.

        • archman8

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

          • dave

Was told sign should be up this week- apparently they have a standard rules/regulations sign that indicates no swimming within 100′ of launch. Hopefully it doesn’t get pulled down.

  • Dennis

I have still not received my boat launch key I made request and payment online on 4/23. I need the key thank you.

    • archman8

Very sorry for the delay and have forwarded your comment on to the necessary parties.

  • Dennis

I requested a boat launch gate key several weeks ago and made payment online. I have still not received a key. Thank you for a prompt response to my request.

  • bill johnston

will there be an agenda available prior to the June 12 st meeting?

    • archman8

An agenda will not be available prior to the June 21st meeting. However, the plan is for the Board to do a few ‘brief’ presentations (perhaps dam construction, Dewey Loeffel issues, July 4th events, picnic/fund raiser, etc.), then open the floor to member comments, suggestions and questions.
An agenda WILL be available later in the summer prior for the August 23rd Annual Membership Meeting.

REWARD $100 for the Return and or Arrest of the persons responsible for steeling 4 Red Adirondack Chairs from the front yard of 88 West Shore Dr.

It is so disappointing to think you canโ€™t leave thing out without someone steeling them. Who will
be hit next and what will be taken? This affects everybody on the lake and needs to be stopped now!

    Tom Barber 857-1243

  • bill johnston

I recieved an email from Dan Zielinski of DEC, he’s preparing the fish study. He’s still looking for fish catches and or photos, especially from this year’s ice fishing season. His email address is djzielin@gw.dec.state.ny.us

  • carl heiner

I have been reading several articles on the Loeffel Dump Site (Nassau, NY)and efforts to detoxify the water prior to it entering Valatie Creek. I would believe your Board is studying this. Could you clarify if our lake has increased toxin levels and do we have a position on this or a group supporting the efforts of the people in Nassau?

    • archman8

The KLC has been in contact with the EPA and DEC and will provide an appropriate response when all information has been received and evaluated.
