Help Stop the Spread of Invasive Aquatic Species

The Kinderhook Lake Corporation has become aware of the concerns for invasive aquatic species being found in ponds, lakes and rivers throughout the region, and several that are already present in Kinderhook Lake. Some species are so small, you may not see them or realize they are hitching a ride with you on your boat, trailer or fishing gear.

The Corporation is currently evaluating alternative methods to help stop the spread of invasive species entering Kinderhook Lake. Education appears to be the logical first step, along with following some general procedures to help protect our waters. To this end, the KLC has arranged for a presentation on invasive aquatic species by DEC Regional Fisheries Manager, Chris VanMaaren, at our Informational Meeting on June 29th, 10:00 AM at the KLIA Hall. All members, their families and friends are invited to attend. In addition, the link in the right-hand column will take you to a list of general procedures you can follow to help stop invasive aquatic hitchhikers.

Discounted Septic Tank Cleaning

Septic system effluent entering our lake is one of the highest contributors to weed growth and reduced water quality. Please protect our lake and your property values by having your septic tank cleaned this spring.

The Kinderhook Lake Corporation has arranged for pumping of septic tanks for a discounted rate of $245 (+tax) for KLC members. If interested, please leave your name, lake address and contact phone number with Rick Theriault at 518-573-5088 or ric1129@yahoo.com by May 31st.

You will be contacted by Fix Family Enterprises to schedule your pump-out during the month of June.

Pumping will be scheduled weekdays only and tank access covers must be exposed and accessible.

A minimum of 20 septic tanks must be pumped to receive the discounted price.

This service is provided by Fix Family Enterprises, Ltd. of Valatie, NY, and is not a service provided by the KLC.

Launch Site Cleanup

On Saturday morning, April 13th, volunteers gathered for several hours to do a large-scale clean up of the Rt. 28 launch site. Volunteers continued the removal of overgrown brush, vines and trash from Rt. 28 all the way to the dam that was started weeks earlier by Steve Sigler and Lisa Benfield. Bernie Kelleher operated the backhoe realigning boulders to expand the parking area and pile brush to be removed by the Town. The backhoe was even used to straighten the bent frame of the cutter boat trailer. Mike Francour and family gathered construction debris and transported it to the county waste station. Signs were reattached to the gate, the new lock was installed on the gate and the KLC boats were launched.

Record Black Crappie Caught in KL

Congratulations to Rick Otty from Hudson who, on Monday January 28th, managed to catch the state record Black Crappie in Kinderhook Lake. The fish measured 18.5″ long, 16.5″ girth and weighed 3 lbs-13 oz. This broke the previous state record black crappie of 17.75″ and 3 lb-12 oz caught in Duck Lake, Cayuga Co., from way back in 1998.

“The Columbia County Board of Supervisors has made available the CodeRED Emergency Notification System; a high-speed telephone communication service for emergency notifications. While the primary purpose of this system is to warn residents of immediate dangers and threats to life and property, it will also be used to broadcast other informational bulletins such as boil water advisories, missing children, large scale traffic-flow problems, severe weather warnings and more. …… The new system is in response to the fire at the TCI of New York recycling facility in Ghent earlier this month.”
