The Kinderhook Lake Corporation has become aware of the concerns for invasive aquatic species being found in ponds, lakes and rivers throughout the region, and several that are already present in Kinderhook Lake. Some species are so small, you may not see them or realize they are hitching a ride with you on your boat, trailer or fishing gear.

The Corporation is currently evaluating alternative methods to help stop the spread of invasive species entering Kinderhook Lake. Education appears to be the logical first step, along with following some general procedures to help protect our waters. To this end, the KLC has arranged for a presentation on invasive aquatic species by DEC Regional Fisheries Manager, Chris VanMaaren, at our Informational Meeting on June 29th, 10:00 AM at the KLIA Hall. All members, their families and friends are invited to attend. In addition, the link in the right-hand column will take you to a list of general procedures you can follow to help stop invasive aquatic hitchhikers.

Together we hope to make a difference.

On Saturday morning, April 13th, volunteers gathered for several hours to do a large-scale clean up of the Rt. 28 launch site. Volunteers continued the removal of overgrown brush, vines and trash from Rt. 28 all the way to the dam that was started weeks earlier by Steve Sigler and Lisa Benfield. Bernie Kelleher operated the backhoe realigning boulders to expand the parking area and pile brush to be removed by the Town. The backhoe was even used to straighten the bent frame of the cutter boat trailer. Mike Francour and family gathered construction debris and transported it to the county waste station. Signs were reattached to the gate, the new lock was installed on the gate and the KLC boats were launched.

The KLC wishes to thank the following volunteers for taking time on a Saturday morning to help make the launch a place we can all be proud of: (in alphabetical order) Lisa Benfield, Ken Bosen, Russ Camadine, Bill and Teri Cleary, Mike Franceour and family, Bernie Kelleher, Tim Kelly, Dan and Robin Langer, Drew Nelson and family, Steve Sigler, Fran Sindlinger (thanks for the coffee and donuts), Rick Thieriault, Jack “the Mayor” Warner, Mike and Jill Weldon, Paul WInslow, (apologies if we forgot anyone). Additional photos are posted on the GALLERY page of our website.

The KLC is proud to announce that it will once again be sponsoring a NYS Boater Safety Course this coming summer. The course is designed as a comprehensive boating course, teaching the fundamentals of safe boating operation. It is an 8-hour class and anyone over the age of 10 can attend at no cost.

The course will be taught on Saturday, June 15th, at the KLIA Hall, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Please bring a bag lunch as there will only be about 30 minutes for lunch. Your instructors will be Rob and Marian Williams, who have taught this course at the KLIA hall for many years.

If you are interested in attending, please send an email with contact information to Rob and Marian at ber01098@fairpoint.net or call 518-784-3024. Pre-registration is required no later than June 1st. A minimum of 10 attendees are required and the class will be cancelled if less than 10 enroll.

A copy of the 2013 edition of the “New York Safe Boating Textbook: A Course on the Safe Operation of Boats and Personal Watercraft” can be downloaded to your computer, phone, or tablet. Hard copy textbooks will be available at the class for those who would like one. We are encouraging you to be green by using the electronic copy of the textbook. Please let Rob and Marian know when you send them your contact information if you will be using an electronic textbook or need a hard copy.

Every year on October 15th, the sluice gate in the dam is fully opened 500+ turns to allow water to drain down the Valatie Kill and Kinderhook Creek until our lake is about 33-inches below the main spillway, about 4.5-feet below average summer levels. This lower depth is permitted by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to protect shorelines and docks from erosion and damage due to winter ice and potential spring flooding from rapid snow-melt and rain. The added benefits of the drawdown are to (1) expose shorelines to freezing temperatures, which kills some of the lake weeds (milfoil and curlyleaf pondweed), and (2) permit residents to cleanup and repair shorelines and docks.

Please remember that burning leaves in the lake bed is not permitted, as doing so adds nutrients for future weed growth. Also, lake residents are urged to clean shorelines in front of and adjacent to their properties and make any necessary repairs to shorelines and docks this fall, as snow-melt and rain can often raise water levels, making access to the lake bed difficult in the spring.

If you haven’t pulled your boats from the lake yet, it’s time to hustle.

The annual KLC membership meeting took place on August 25th at the KLIA Hall. Sadly, it was not well attended. At this meeting, directors were elected and concerns about the lake were addressed. Here is a sampling of items that were discussed:

  1. The lack of universal membership by lake property (riparian) owners, and how more participation might be encouraged.
  2. How to control the many non-member power boats entering the lake and how to regulate the informal fishing tournaments on the lake, which also give non-members access; controlling access at the Rose St. Ext. launch.
  3. Repairs needed for the dam’s sluice gate and outlet pipe. The Board is awaiting DEC approval to construct a coffer dam this fall to better inspect the gate and pipe and determine an appropriate course of action and an estimated cost of repairs.
  4. A committee of board members was appointed to consider adopting recreation guidelines for the lake, as well as addressing signage, security and other issues at the Rt. 28 launch site.
