Over the past few years we have seen a decline in the population of panfish in Kinderhook Lake. This is partially due to the increased amount and massive sizes of Northern Pike found in the lake. The KLC Fish Committee believes it is time to remove some of these large fish to help preserve and balance other species within the lake.

Ice conditions permitting, on Saturday, January 18, 2020, we will hold a Northern Pike Ice Fishing Contest free to the public between 7:00am and 2:00pm. From 2:00pm to 4:00pm we will be accepting Northern Pike for disposal in the large metal building at 9 Old West Shore Drive in Valatie. Only fish caught within the legal size and bag limit per person will be accepted. KLC merchandise prizes will be awarded to those individuals with the longest fish and most fish. Again, this contest is open to the public and no entry fee is required.

We will also have membership applications, member window placards, boat launch keys, trailer stickers, and merchandise available for sale.

Please check our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/kinderhooklakecorp) in the days leading up to this event to see if there are any updates or weather-related changes. Feel free to contact Bio_mikef@yahoo.com or 17freebyrd@gmail.com if you have any questions about this event. Hope to see you there.

Free Ice Fishing Weekend: President’s Day weekend (February 13-14, 2016) will be a free ice fishing weekend to encourage more New Yorkers to try Ice fishing while many are on winter recess. Assuming sufficient ice to support access this year, residents and visitors age 16 and older will be able to fish the fresh or marine waters of New York State without a license, providing a great opportunity for people to learn about this popular sport.

On July 17, 2015DEC AIS press release photo July 2015, DEC issued a Press Release reporting that their action plan to combat aquatic invasive species (AIS) and protect New York’s natural resources and economy will be implemented across New York State. Here is the link to the AIS Management Plan.

We need to be vigilant about protecting our lake. Please make sure that you, your neighbors and friends follow all guidelines in the New York Boaters Guide to Cleaning, Drying and Disinfecting Boating Equipment before entering and after exiting the lake.

Daniel Zielinski from DEC has prepared a brief summary of DEC’s Kinderhook Lake fish survey efforts over the past 13 years. DEC is planning on producing a fish management plan for Kinderhook Lake this winter. This will be a much more detailed report based on recent surveys and it will make recommendations for future management of the fish populations in the lake, particularly the game fish populations. A draft report is expected to be completed by the end of March 2014.

To assist in their efforts to complete the report, DEC is looking for anecdotal information specifically from anyone who has caught a tiger muskie in Kinderhook Lake. If you or someone you know has information on when, where, length and weight of tiger muskie catches, please email the information along with any photos of your catch directly to Dan Zielinski at djzielin@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
