09. January 2022 · Comments Off on Rising Costs · Categories: General Information, Membership, Update

Hardly a day goes by without news of rising inflation. We see rising prices of food, gas, building material, cars, almost everything. And of course, it’s no different for the KLC. Our basic operational costs have been rising for years while membership dues have essentially remained the same since 2008 (except a small $15 raise to the basic membership in 2014). The cost of printing, postage, envelopes, gate lock and keys, copper sulfate, equipment maintenance, winter storage, insurance, etc. are all rising. In addition, the KLC continues to transfer $850/month from the General Fund to the Dam Reserve Fund. While last year members generously donated over $75,000 towards the cost of ProcellaCor to successfully treat Eurasian milfoil, the KLC had to spend over $12,000 from the General Fund to make up for the total treatment cost of almost $88,000. And please remember that the KLC receives no additional funding from any private or public agencies or municipalities. Accordingly, we find it necessary to increase each level of membership dues by $25: basic membership to $150, sustaining membership to $200, and benefactor membership to $225. Launch gate keys will remain at $15. We’ll now offer a single business sponsorship level at $200, which includes a basic membership.

We hope you will continue to support the KLC through membership dues and business sponsorships and strongly urge you to consider donating to our restricted funds. Restricted funds include the Dam Reserve Fund (for future improvements, maintenance, and flood control measures at the dam), the Weed Management Fund (to help control the growth of invasive and nuisance aquatic vegetation), the Water Quality Fund (to continue herbicide treatments to control algae growth), and the Fish Stocking Fund (for stocking game fish and habitat).

Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

13. November 2021 · Comments Off on Approaching Winter Drawdown Level · Categories: Drawdown, General Information

The lake is finally approaching its winter drawdown level. As an annual reminder to shoreline property owners, please do not rake leaves into the lakebed as they provide nutrients to feed invasive weed growth and algae. If possible, rake and remove any leaves that have blown into the lakebed. Branches and twigs should be removed as they tend to end up clogging the sluice gate at the dam and provide a danger to boaters and swimmers. Also, remember that the water level can rise quickly in the spring depending on rainfall and snowmelt, so please try to complete any shoreline projects this fall.

25. September 2021 · Comments Off on The Drawdown is Coming · Categories: Drawdown, General Information

This is an early reminder that on October 15 we will begin to lower the lake to winter level. How fast the water level drops depends on the weather. We suggest you plan to complete any shoreline projects this fall as it is often difficult to control the rising water level in the spring due to rain and snowmelt. For newbies around the lake, the winter water level is approximately 52″ lower than the average summer level and we usually begin to bring the water back up to summer level shortly after ice-out in the spring.

After a cloudy and chilly morning, the weather cooperated and July 4th turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.

The Kayak Rally was attended by 21 paddlers in the morning chill collecting raffle tickets from 32 orange-flagged locations around the lake. Congrats to the raffle winners: 1st prize to Macy Zeilman2nd prize to Holly Kaiser3rd prize to George Longworth. Each raffle winner received KLC merchandise. Also, thanks to all the volunteers who flew orange flags and handed out tickets.

The Boat Parade was another huge success with about 15 beautifully decorated boats touring the perimeter of the lake, cheered on by hundreds of lake community fans. Congratulations to the winners: Most Patriotic boat, the big eagle, by Paul, Kathleen, and Robert Haen; Most Original boat, the pirate boat, by Rick and Cheryl Fitzpatrick; Funniest boat, the jungle boat, by Shelley and Scott Langer. Each winner received cash prizes. Thanks to Mike and Dawn Francoeur for leading the parade.

And, as always, the annual Ring of Fire was fun to see. Nightime on the lake was a head-spinning adventure and it was a joy to watch all the evening holiday festivities.

We are closing in on one of the favorite days to be on Kinderhook Lake – July 4th, Independence Day. The KLC will be hosting the usual array of events including bringing back the popular kayak rally.

Kayak Rally
This event is open to all non-motorized vessels – kayaks, rowboats, canoes, paddleboards, rafts, etc. Between 8:30 and 11:30 AM collect tickets from nearly 30 orange-flagged locations spread around the lake. Write your name and phone number on each ticket. Don’t forget a plastic bag and pen to collect your tickets and keep them dry.
Important, due to the limited space at the launch and anticipated crowds for this event, please bring your tickets to the tan and green metal building at 9 OLD West Shore Dr in Valatie by 12-noon to be entered into the prize drawing.

Boat Parade
Decorate your boats and meet at One Tree Island at 1:30. Follow the lead boat as you parade around the lake, hootin’ and hollerin’ all the way. Prizes will be awarded to the Most Patriotic, Most Unique, and Funniest boats.

Ring of Fire
Light your flares and torches along the shoreline at 9:00 pm for a lovely bright ring around the lake. The more flares, the better.

Note: Flares and KLC merchandise will be available at the tan and green metal building at 9 OLD West Shore Dr in Valatie from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm on July 4th. If you need them sooner or cannot make it on the 4th, please call Pete Walkes at 914-217-6770.

07. March 2021 · Comments Off on Commence Raising the Lake to Summer Level – April 3 · Categories: Drawdown, General Information, Update

Every spring, shortly after the ice is off the lake, we crank down the sluice gate, add the flashboards back on top of the dam, and begin to raise the lake to summer level in accordance with our DEC permit. This year, that activity will start on April 3rd. Depending on the weather and water flow through the Valatiekill from our 41 square mile watershed, raising the lake fully will take anywhere from a week to over a month.

If you are a shoreline owner, please take some time before April 3rd to rake and clean out the lake bed in front of your property. Rotting leaves provide nutrients that spur the growth of aquatic invasive species and twigs and branches can float down to the dam and clog the outlet as well as create a hazard for boaters.
