July 4th is just around the corner.

Kayak Rally: 8:00 – 11:30. Paddle around the lake with any non-motorized vessel and collect as many tickets as you can from orange flagged locations around the lake. Print your name and phone # on each ticket and bring your tickets to the Rt 28 launch by 11:30. Tickets will be drawn for great prizes, including a $50 gift certificate to Steiner’s Sporting Goods and gift certificates for KLC merchandise.

Boat Parade: Starts 1:30 from One Tree Island. Decorate your vessel to tour the lake, entertain your neighbors, make some noise and have a ton of fun. Be recognized for best decorations and most patriotic boat.

Ring of Fire: 9:00pm. Light your flares at 9:00pm along the shoreline for the annual Ring of Fire. Flares will be available at the Rt. 28 launch from 11am to 1pm on July 4th, or call Ken Bosen (see DIRECTORS page for contact info) to arrange for flares at other times.

Keep your fingers crossed for great weather. Please be safe, and let’s have yet another spectacular Fourth of July on Kinderhook Lake.

We hope to use this page as a means of keeping members and other interested people better informed about what the KLC is doing as stewards of the dam and lake and as a means to publish other information related to the lake and lake community.

July 4th Results

During the morning and early afternoon, July 4th turned out to be somewhat of a bust – at least weather-wise. But that didn’t stop a decent contingency of 26 brave souls from turning out for the Kayak Rally. Congratulations to the winners: David O’Neil ($100), Jessica Smith ($50), Corrin Farmer ($25) and Angelika Nelson ($25). Thanks to the 40 lakefront property owners who put out orange flags and ran out between raindrops to give out tickets.

Although the boat parade was officially cancelled, five decorated boats ignored the rain and paraded around the lake on their own announcing their arrival with great fanfare. By mid-afternoon the rain had stopped and boaters wasted no time getting out on the lake to enjoy a rain-less afternoon.

Sadly the Ring of Fire was not as vibrant as usual, perhaps due to the weather. However, there was no shortage of spectacular fireworks displays around the lake lasting well into the night. Hoping everyone made the best of the Fourth of July and the rest of the holiday weekend.

NYS Boater Safety Course

The KLC has again organized a NYS Boater Safety Course this spring, sponsored by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the NY State Park Police. It is designed as a comprehensive boating course, teaching the fundamentals of safe boating operation. It is an 8-hour class and anyone over the age of 10 can attend at no cost.

The course will be taught on Saturday, May 30th, at the KLIA Hall, from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Please bring a bag lunch as there will only be about 30 minutes for lunch.

If you are interested in attending, please call 518-784-3024. Pre-registration is required no later than May 22nd. At least 10 attendees are required or the class will be cancelled.

The latest edition of the “New York Safe Boating Textbook: A Course on the Safe Operation of Boats and Personal Watercraft” can be downloaded to your computer, phone, or tablet by going to http://nysparks.com/recreation/boating/education.aspx. Hard copy textbooks will be available free at the class.

The KLC is once again pleased to announce a NYS Boater Safety Course this fall. This is designed as a comprehensive boating course, teaching the fundamentals of safe boating operation. It is an 8-hour class and anyone over the age of 10 can attend at no cost.

The course will be taught on Sunday, October 26th, at the KLIA Hall, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please bring a bag lunch. Hot dogs may be available for purchase.

A copy of the latest edition of the “New York Safe Boating Textbook: A Course on the Safe Operation of Boats and Personal Watercraft” can be downloaded to your computer, phone, or tablet by going to http://nysparks.com/recreation/boating/education.aspx. Hard copy textbooks will be available at the class for those who would like one.

In light of last years legislation requiring all individuals born after May 1, 1996 to successfully complete the NYS Boater Safety Course, this course is critical for anyone under 18 years old who wishes to operate motor powered watercraft. 10-17 year olds will receive a NYS Safe Boater Certificate for free; those 18 or older can receive a certificate if they wish for a $10 fee to NYS.

July 4th weekend is just a month away and the KLC has a few updated plans for our annual events.

Kayak Rally – Friday, July 4th – 8:00 am – 11:30 am
The Kayak Rally that was so well attended last year will be held from 8:00 am – 11:30 am on July 4th. Although this is called a Kayak Rally, this event is open to any non-motorized watercraft: kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, rafts, etc. Enter the lake at any location, gather as many tickets as you can from about 30 locations around the lake (marked with orange flags), and bring your tickets to the Rt. 28 boat launch by 11:30 am for entry into the prize raffle.

Boat Parade – Friday, July 4th – meet 1:30 pm at One Tree Island
As always, the annual boat parade will circle the lake starting at 1:30 pm on July 4th. This year we will pick up the pace a little and hopefully circle the lake in about 90 minutes. The past few years have had a less than stellar showing for this event, so we encourage as many of you to decorate your vessels and join in the fun. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated boat, the most patriotic boat and the funniest boat.

Ring of FIre – Friday, July 4th – 9:00 pm
Light your flares along the shoreline at 9:00 pm on July 4th. Let’s ring the lake with fire as we celebrate Independence Day. Flares will be available at the Rt. 28 boat launch between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on the 4th, and flares and KLC merchandise will be available after 3:00 pm at Ken and Patty Bosen’s on Rose Street Extension.

White Perch Derby – Saturday, July 5th – 7:00 am – 1:00 pm
Due to the overabundance of white perch in Kinderhook Lake, this year’s derby is designed to encourage you to catch as many white perch as you can, starting at 7:00 am on July 5th. Bring your white perch ‘collection’ to the Rt. 28 boat launch at 1:00 pm. Prizes will be awarded to individuals in several age groups who catch the most fish. All the fish will be donated to a local farm for use as fertilizer. NOTE: this event will take place on Saturday JULY 5th, NOT July 4th.

We hope to see as many of our members and lake friends join in these fun events.

Dam Progress Report

Construction for the latest dam repair started on December 3, 2013. The contractor installed a coffer steel dam and de-watered the area in front of the sluice gate. Upon inspection, it was learned that the gasket, which we assumed required replacement, was in fine condition. However, several of the surrounding wedges were missing, which was the root cause of the leaks around the gate. The wedges were replaced and the sluice gate now has a good seal. Although the final tally is not yet in, alternative methods of installing the coffer steel dam for dewatering and replacement of the wedges instead of the entire sluice gate gasket may have reduced the cost of Phase 1 work to less than half of the original estimate.

Once dry, the sluice pipe was inspected and it was determined that the pipe needed to be relined. The contractor is preparing an estimate to reline the sluice pipe. Depending on the estimated cost and funds available in the Dam Reserve Fund, it is hoped that work to reline the sluice pipe and repairs to the dam’s facade can be completed this coming spring. In the meantime, the water level has been returned to its normal winter level. However, the coffer steel dam remains in place, limiting full control of winter water levels.

As mentioned in the October KLC News, there is a potential for more hazardous conditions for people venturing out on the ice this winter. The limited control of the water level below the ice could cause thinner ice. If you are not sure, please stay off the ice.

DEC Fish Survey

Daniel Zielinski from DEC has prepared a brief summary of DEC’s Kinderhook Lake fish survey efforts over the past 13 years. DEC is planning on producing a fish management plan for Kinderhook Lake this winter. This will be a much more detailed report based on recent surveys and it will make recommendations for future management of the fish populations in the lake, particularly the game fish populations. A draft report is expected to be completed by the end of March 2014.

To assist in their efforts to complete the report, DEC is looking for anecdotal information specifically from anyone who has caught a tiger muskie in Kinderhook Lake. If you or someone you know has information on when, where, length and weight of tiger muskie catches, please email the information along with any photos of your catch directly to Dan Zielinski at djzielin@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
